World Steelpan Heritage Month

A Community Built Around the Pan

Prince George's County holds one of the most active steelpan communities in the country. Every August, players and orchestras across the region mark World Steelpan Heritage Month by honoring the instrument's Caribbean origins and the discipline it takes to master it.

This year's celebration brings four orchestras to one stage: two youth and adult ensembles rooted right here in Mount Rainier, and two respected guest bands from across the DMV. The afternoon also falls during the Cultural Academy for Excellence's 30th year of arts education in Prince George's County, a milestone that adds extra weight to the occasion.
