Play the Music
of the Caribbean.
No Experience Needed.
Learn steelpan from one of the DMV's most respected arts education organizations. Classes for complete beginners. All instruments provided.
Steelpan is the world's only acoustic instrument invented in the 20th century.
Born in Trinidad and Tobago, it produces some of the most distinctive and joyful sounds in the world. Now you can learn to play it, right here in the DMV, guided by a qualified instructor with roots in one of the region's most celebrated music organizations.
These classes are designed for complete beginners. You do not need to read music. You do not need an instrument. All you need to show up with is curiosity.
Fall 2026 enrollment is open for interest. Add your name to the waitlist and we will contact you as soon as dates are confirmed.
More than learning an instrument.
Steelpan connects you to a living cultural tradition while giving you skills that last a lifetime.
Absolute Beginners Welcome
No prior musical experience or instrument required. Our qualified instructor meets you exactly where you are and builds your skills at a comfortable pace.
Rooted in Caribbean Culture
You will learn the history and cultural significance of steelpan alongside the music. Calypso, soca, pop, and holiday classics. Music with real meaning behind it.
Community-Centered Learning
You are not just learning in a class. You are joining a community. CAFE students perform together, grow together, and stay connected long after a session ends.
Instruction from a Trusted Organization
CAFE's youth ensemble, PVYSO, has performed at the Kennedy Center, the Smithsonian, and Strathmore. That standard of excellence carries into every class we run.
Grow into an Ensemble
Class completers are invited to join PanTones, CAFE's adult steelband, and continue performing at community events across Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Northern Virginia.
