An Innovative Approach to Education through the Performing Arts

Saturday Academy
Students meet each Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from September through June. The time is divided between academic, music instruction and band rehearsal. Additional orchestra rehearsal practices are scheduled every Tuesday and Friday evening. This approach has resulted in academic success. Thirty five percent (35%) of CAFE students are currently on their school’s honor rolls. Ninety Nine percent (99%) of our high school graduates attend college.

  • Mathematics - Students receive tutorial assistance in math. Additionally, mathematical principles and concepts are reinforced to ensure that students are able to advance to higher grade levels.

  • Language Arts - Students receive assistance in reading, writing, improving comprehension skills, and building vocabulary and oratory skills.

  • Science - Instructors work with students to reinforce what they are being taught in their schools, and to help expand their interest and knowledge base.

  • Chess - Students learn to play chess.

  • Art - CAFÉ students are given to opportunity to work with an artist-in-residence.

Assessments are done by CAFÉ to determine grade levels and to ensure that all students’ needs are addressed. CAFÉ also uses the students’ school report cards and teacher’s recommendations as part of the assessment tool.

Music Component
Positive Vibrations Youth Steel Orchestra (PVYSO): This highly acclaimed orchestra is comprised of the students who attend the Saturday Academy. Although music theory is required for all students, they are also taught by rote. Students are prepared to sit for the theory exams given here by an associate body of Associated Board of the Royal School of Music, (ABRSM) Edinburgh, England. They also sit for the practical examination given here by the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, and Trinidad. An examiner travels to Maryland annually to administer the tests to the students. The results are mailed back to CAFÉ from both institutions.

Life Skills
CAFE seeks to prepare students to examine their world critically and respond to its challenges with creativity. Students are encouraged to assume leadership; to value the opportunity for service; and, to accept, understand and appreciate the diversity of their community and the world. Additionally, students earn Community Service hours.

Summer Lab
The Summer Lab – Offers youths ages 10-18 an intensive three-week music laboratory on the steel drums. The Lab is divided into three levels Beginners/Introductory, Intermediate and Advanced Levels. Students are taught by trained and experienced music instructors from around the world. Youth who complete the summer lab may audition for entry into CAFÉ’s year-round Saturday Academy.
